What Is a Good GATE 2026 Score?

Your GATE score out of 1000 determines which colleges and PSUs you can apply to. Here is a general guide:

GATE Score (out of 1000)Target Institutes / Opportunities
900 – 1000Top IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur), AIR under 50
750 – 900IITs (Kharagpur, Roorkee, Guwahati), top NITs
650 – 750Mid-tier IITs, NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal)
500 – 650Other NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, many PSUs
400 – 500Lower NITs, state-funded colleges, some PSUs
Below 400Qualifying score only, limited options

For PSU recruitment through GATE 2026, most top PSUs (IOCL, ONGC, NTPC, BHEL, GAIL) require a score of 700 to 800 or above, depending on the branch and the year’s competition.

GATE 2026 Normalisation Process – How Is Your Score Calculated?

Since GATE 2026 was held across 4 days and multiple sessions, IIT Guwahati applies a normalisation process to ensure fairness across sessions of varying difficulty. Here is how it works:

  • Raw marks are the actual marks you scored out of 100 in your session
  • For multi-session papers, raw marks are converted to normalized marks to account for difficulty variation
  • GATE Score (out of 1000) is then calculated using this formula:

GATE Score = 1000 × (Marks Obtained – Qualifying Marks) / (Mean Marks of Top Candidates – Qualifying Marks)

  • All India Rank is assigned based on GATE Score, not raw marks
  • The normalisation process applies to papers held in multiple sessions (ME, CE, EC, EE, CS, etc.)
  • Papers held in a single session do not require normalisation

What to Do After GATE 2026 Result – Your Complete Action Plan

Whether you qualify with a high rank or just meet the cutoff, here is exactly what to do after the GATE 2026 result is declared:

  • Apply individually to each IIT through their own portals (IIT Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Guwahati, and others)

  • Shortlisting is based on GATE score, followed by GD or interview as per the PSU
  • NPCIL uses GATE 2026 scores for CE, CH, EC, EE, IN, and ME disciplines
